1. B.Com.

B.Com. stands for Bachelor of Commerce. This is a course that most 12th Commerce stream students pursue after schooling! And there are many reasons why this course is so popular. First of all, the level of academic difficulty associated with this course is not too high. That means it is relatively easy to go thorough B.Com. program and obtain a Degree.

Another advantage is that it allows students to venture on to other fields. It is one such course, after doing which, one may go for other job oriented courses such as M.B.A., Vocational courses, Skill oriented courses etc.

Also, there are number of Private as well as Government Institutes offering B.Com. programs throughout India! So, finding a College and seat won’t be too difficult a task for 12th passed Commerce stream students! This, according to me, is another advantage that B.Com. course offers.

When it comes to B.Com., course duration is 3 years. After its completion, students may go for M.Com., which is Masters program. M.Com. will take 2 years to complete. After B.Com.-M.Com., one may easily get a job in teaching sector.

Other than that, there are numerous job opportunities for B.Com. graduates in Private and Government sectors. There are many Government job posts for which B.Com. graduates may apply. Usually, only Graduates are allowed to pursue L.L.B. But, thanks to new rules, it is also possible for 12th Commerce students to pursue Law course from Law schools after schooling.

But to do so, they will have to select an integrated Law course! Such integrated courses lasts 5 years. These Integrated courses are combination of a Degree course and traditional L.L.B. course. For example- B.Com. and L.L.B./ B.A. and L.L.B. etc.

3. C.A. (Chartered Accountancy)

 C.A. stands for Chartered Accountant. Job of a C.A. is to see to it that the financial affairs of businesses and companies are in accordance with the laws set by Government authorities. Their tasks include looking into tax affairs, look into financial transactions through auditing, creating necessary reports etc.

To become a C.A., one has to successfully complete Chartered Accountancy course and become a member of ICAI (Institute of Chartered Accountants of India).

In case of 12th Commerce passed students, they may start off by applying for CPT (Common Proficiency Test). This test managed by ICAI.

Once CPT is cleared, students have to appear for C.A. Inter course. After completing C.A. Inter exam and doing Information Technology Training Course, one may appear for C.A. Final exam!

After clearing the final exam, one is said to have completed Chartered Accountancy test and become a C.A.! Studying involved in becoming C.A. is tough. But at the same time, the career prospects are exciting!

After becoming a C.A., one may take up positions related to Finance department in Private companies as well as Government Enterprises. There are many Government posts, which B.A. Economics graduates are eligible to apply for! And in private sector, companies hire graduates to take up posts related to finance.

 For any company to function properly, a company secretary is needed! And to become a C.S., one has to appear for Company Secretaryship course and clear the exams associated with the course. ICSI (Institute of Company Secretaries of India) is the Institute that has been tasked by the Government to conduct the course as well as examination!

In case of 12th Commerce passed students, to get selected for the C.S. course offered by ICSI, they must go through a 3 stage program. The three programs are-

When it comes to Hospitality courses, the eligibility criteria is not very strict. Even 10th passed students may pursue Hospitality Diploma courses! But on the other side, such courses possess good value too! I must say that they are job oriented courses.

8. Animation and Multimedia Courses

9. Journalism and Mass Communication

Different programs such as diploma, certificate as well as degree courses are available. Depending on the program, duration of the course may be 1-4 years. Talking about job opportunities, private sector jobs are available, which one may take up. Also, one may start up on one’s own too!

12. Hotel Management

A job oriented course this one is! It certainly has got elements of hospitality sector. But, degree course in Hotel Management is more valuable than the hospitality diploma courses that I mentioned above.

Course duration is 4 years, in case of Degree course. And when it comes to job opportunities, there are jobs available in both Private as well as Government sectors!

 B.Sc. IT after 12th Commerce: Possibilities & limitations

 Commerce stream students have been asking me questions about a technical course that they want to pursue after completing 12th standard. They want to know whether it is possible to pursue B.Sc. IT course after 12th Commerce. I cleared their doubts via mail. But since the number of queries has been going up, I decided to come up with a guide for them! In this article, you will be reading about the prospects associated with pursuing B.Sc. Information Technology after completing 12th commerce stream. You will be reading about limitations, requirements and alternative courses.

 

Is it possible to pursue B.Sc. IT after completing 12th Commerce stream schooling?

The answer would be yes! Though B.Sc. IT is treated as a Science stream course, many Colleges also are offering admission to Commerce stream students. But there are some conditions and limitations though. You will be reading about the limitations and conditions in the next section.

Limitations and conditions

In case of most Colleges offering admission to Commerce stream students (for B.Sc. IT program), they have an eligibility criteria. As per the criteria, the student must have had Mathematics and/or Computer subjects during 11th and 12th Commerce stream schooling! Students who satisfy this criteria may land a seat in such Colleges, when it comes to B.Sc. IT course.

Let me also tell that there are other Colleges too, which don’t go by this eligibility criteria. If you don’t satisfy the above condition, you may try your luck at such a College! You may also give alternative courses a try too (they are mentioned in the next section)!

The main limitation is that Commerce stream students won’t be able to get admission in top quality institutes for B.Sc. IT course. The top colleges’ seats will be filled up fast, based on merit marks of entrance examination (science stream) and board examination.

Other courses available

Why go for B.Sc. IT when commerce stream students have good technical courses available in front of them? The best option available in front of Commerce stream students is B.Com. IT. Yes, B.Com. Information Technology is a course that focuses on IT field and has been made keeping Commerce stream students in mind. After completing B.Com. IT course, graduates may go for PG IT course- M.Sc. IT or M.Com. IT.

Best B.Com. specializations for a better job & salary

B. Com. stands for Bachelor of Commerce. It is a 3 years long Bachelor Degree program. Usually, it is 12th Commerce stream passed students who pursue this professional course after completing their schooling. Still, even 12th Science stream and Arts stream students are technically eligible to pursue this Degree. Students who enroll for this Bachelor Degree program have to select a set of subjects to be pursued. Usually, in case of B. Com. Degree, the important topics taught during the program are- managerial subjects, accountancy, economics, law, statistics, finance, English etc. B. Com. Honours is a good program where the above courses are taught and at the same time, students are allowed to pursue a specialization subject in final year of the program. In this article, I will list down the top and market oriented specialization areas that B. Com. Aspirants may pursue!

B.Com. is like a foundation course. Based on this qualification, you may specialize in different disciplines. And when it comes to such disciplines, the better they are, the better your career prospects and salary will be!Some specializations are newly introduced ones. So, don’t expect each and every College to offer all of the below mentioned courses.Information Management Discipline (mentioned below) is a good example of it. It is a relatively new entrant. It also focuses on Technology, along with concepts of Commerce. Not all Colleges are offering this discipline at the moment!

Note that the below mentioned specializations are doing very well at present. They are also expected to perform at a similar level in future also. But with changes in Global market, the existing scenario may change!

B. Com. – basic course details

It is one of the oldest degrees offered by Colleges in India. Normally, it is a program that lasts 3 years. In the past, B. Com. used to be a general course, covering number of subjects, which were commonly related to commerce sector. Students had to select a combination of subjects that they had to then pursue. At present, the old B. Com. program is offered across Colleges in India. Along with it, newly introduced specialization programs are also being offered across many Indian Colleges.

Talking about the core subjects of the program, one can say that B. Com. program usually focuses on subjects like-Accounts, Mathematics and Economics. Nowadays, as I mentioned above, new B. Com. programs and specialization courses are also being offered. Some of the new programs are- B. Com. in Computer Application, B. Com. in Information Technology, B. Com. in E Commerce etc.

The 3 years long course is divided into 6 semesters. Let us analyze each semester and the core subjects that one has to face in each semester. I’m talking about the regular B. Com. program and not any specialization course. Let us start with the first semester-

B.Com. syllabus and important subjects

1st semester core subjects-

1 Business Economics-1 – the main aim of this subject is to familiarize students with the various concepts of economics and their applications. Some important topics covered in this subject are- economic and non-economic activities, wealth, goods and services, value and price, consumption, production, exchange and firm & industry.

2 Financial Accounting-1 – the main aim of this subject is to familiarize students with the concepts of Accounting. Important topics covered in this subject are- Indian Accounting Standards, Accounts for Non Profit Organizations, Amalgamation of partnership firms, Accounts of Joint Life Policy and Accounts of piecemeal distribution of cash among partners.

3 Company Law-1 – the main aim of this subject is to impart the basic knowledge of Company Law. Important topics covered in this subject are- development of Company Law in India, Joint Stock company- types and formation, Documents required to form a Company, Share capital and procedure for issues of share.

4 Business Administration-1 – basic Management skills are imparted to students using this subject. Main topics covered in this subject are- introduction to Management, planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling.

5 Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship-1 – to create entrepreneur awareness among students, to make them aware of the business environment and motivate them to take up entrepreneurship etc are some of the main aims of this subject. Principles of Entrepreneurship, Introduction to Entrepreneurship and Social responsibility and Accountability are some of the main topics covered in this subject.

6 Fundamentals of Marketing-1 – the main aim of this subject is to familiarize students with the basic concepts of Marketing practices. Some important topics covered in this subject are- Introduction to Marketing, Marketing Organization and Environment, Marketing Mix, Physical Distribution and Price Mix & Promotion Mix.

7 Computer Application & IT-1 – Information Technology has started influencing so many fields out there! The aim of this subject is to familiarize students with the concepts and uses of Information Technology. Important topics covered in this subject are- Internet and Internet concepts, MS- Word, MS- Excel and Conversions.

8 SSP-1 – Imparting Salesmanship skills is the aim of this subject. Personal Selling, Promotion Concepts and Sales Organization are some important topics that are covered in this subject.

9 Mathematics-1 – Introducing students to various Mathematical theories is the main aim of this course. Sets, Permutation and Combinations, Binomial Theorem and Sequence and Series are some of the important topics covered in this subject.

10 BRF-1 – this subject’s main aim is to familiarize students with the Business Regulatory Framework. Important topics- Indian Contract Act-1872, Sale of Goods Act- 1930, Consumer Protection Act- 1986, Competition Act- 2002.

11 Elective subject – Elective courses vary from one Institute to another. Some common elective subjects offered are- Accounting and Finance, Banking, Business Management etc.

7 Fundamentals of Insurance– Important topics covered- Introduction to Insurance, Principles of Insurance, Life Insurance, Fire Insurance and Marine Insurance.

8 Elective subjects.

Apart from the above mentioned subjects, English Language subject- English-6 is also present.

So, those were some core subjects that B. Com. program consists of. Don’t get worried at the sheer number of subjects present in each semester. A good set of them are allied subjects. You won’t need to pursue all of them, but just select a set of subjects that you will have to pursue! Also, if you are interested in Law, you may also go for an Integrated Law course where you may select a combination of B. Com. and LLB!

Eligibility Criteria

Traditionally, Commerce stream students go for B. Com. program. But technically, any stream students may go for it after 12th standard! One must be 12th passed (10+2 Schooling system) with minimum 50% marks from a recognized board.

Advantages of pursuing B. Com. Degree

When compared to many other professional courses, B. Com. is relatively easier to pursue and takes only 3 years to complete. Then comes the availability of Colleges offering B. Com. It is one such course that is taught at Colleges across India. One will be able to find may good quality Government as well as Private Colleges offering B. Com. program. So, finding a good College near your location won’t be a difficult task!

Then comes the availability of specializations and new B. Com. programs. B. Com. (Honours) program allows students to specialize in a specific discipline during the final year of the program. Making use of this opportunity, students may specialize in useful disciplines like- Law, Finance, marketing etc and thus give their career prospects a boost!

And like I mentioned before, new courses like B. Com. in Computer Applications, E Commerce, Information Technology are also available. These relatively new courses are market as well as job oriented ones.

Also, B. Com. program could act like a basic foundation, on which you may build your career. For example, after B. Com. you may go for number of other programs like- MBA, Civil Services, Central Government jobs, Law, Chartered Accountancy, Company Secretaryship etc.

Job opportunities and Scope

B. Com. graduates are eligible to apply for a number of Government as well as Private sector jobs. The discipline in which one specializes also determines the type of job that one could land after graduation. The better the area of specialization, the better the salary and career prospects will be!

Managerial, Accountancy and Auditing are some of the common job posts that B. Com. graduates may land in Private firms. Graduates will also be able to find clerical jobs in MNCs, Financial Institutions and other Organizations. Also, after going for further studies such as MBA, Law etc, students may build a rewarding career in those field also!
